Tanintharyi Region

Tanintharyi is the southernmost region of Myanmar, home to the Mergui archipelago and thousands of islands. Abundant in wildlife and beaches with golden sand, there are several areas for sailing and diving opportunities. The main industries of the region include agriculture, forestry and fishing, often to make ‘nga pi’ (dried fish) frequently eaten across Myanmar and to export into Thailand.

Families local to the area use trochus shell and mother of pearl to make homeware including placemats, coasters and spoons. The interior of the shell is sanded down, shaped and polished by hand to create the desired item.
